Dvd Not Working After Windows 10 Upgrade

My wife upgraded her computer to Windows 10 from Windows 7. Prior to upgrading, her DVD/CD reader/writer worked fine. After the upgrade it no longer works. You can load and eject a disk but after closing the drive, it just times out without ever loading. It is not possible to read or write data to/from disks. I'm a GNU/Linux guy so this is a bit out of my comfort zone. I could use some help. here's what I've done so far:

Press Windows key + X and select Device manager. Now click on DVD/CD-ROM drive and expand it. Right click on the device driver and click on update. Additionally, I would also suggest you to refer to the manufacturer/computer assembler's website to look for updated drivers for your CD/DVD drive. Jan 08, 2019  Boot to the Windows 10 desktop, then launch Device Manager by pressing  Windows key + X and clicking  Device Manager. Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, right-click the optical drive. Command Prompt says I am not allowed to do that as administrator, etc. DVD writer, built in camera & microphone, all were working fine before Windows 10 upgrade now none of them are even seen by my previously working fine laptop. I have a Toshiba Satellite p755 that i recently upgraded to Windows 10.

1. Googled the problem and found hundreds of forum threads about this issue, so I know it's a widespread problem after Windows 10 upgrades that has existed for over a year on a wide range of computers (Dells, HP, etc) and DVD brands. Unfortunately 90% of the forum threads contain lots of people complaining about the problem and no definitive solutions. A few suggested solutions were found (see next items).

Cd/dvd drive not detected after upgrade to windows 10 ‎ 10:48 AM My CD/DVD drive is unable to read either dvd or cd discs in windows 10. When i put the cd and push the drive back on, the green light flashes for 2 seconds and stops. I am able to eject the disc using CD Drive - Eject options. The upgrade process might cause some of the DVD driver not working correctly, so please take a try to uninstall it, then download the related driver from the manufacturer, install it manually to check out. After Windows 10 was upgraded, CD/DVD (TSSTcorp CDDVDW SU-208DB) stopped working. Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19) I was trying to uninstall and reinstall, but no success.

2. I checked the device manager and the DVD/CD drive shows up normally. Properties show the generic Windows driver and claims the device is working normally. I tried uninstalling the driver, then rebooting. Driver was automatically re-installed but it did not solve the problem. Tried deleting the device completely and rebooted. Device reappeared but still did not solve the problem.

3. A few forums offered an obscure solution that involved editing a registry entry: 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesatapiController0 EnumDevice1 0x00000001'

I checked this but the entry is already present on our system.

4. I've verified the hardware itself is working fine on Windows 7, it only fails to work properly after 'upgrading' to Windows 10.

So, can anyone from Microsoft offer any help on this one?

OK did a Windows logo key -R. entered regedit.

Went to HKEY_Local_MachineSystemCurrentControlSetServicesatapi

Under it I created a folder called 'Controller0'

In Controller0 I did a 'New' (left click) and typed in 'EnumDevice1' as 'RegDWORD' and modified it to binary '1' in hex.

Exit regedit and restart computer

After the restart, I can now see the CD/DVD in device manager.

Now I can try to reload the device drivers.

This did work for me. The '?' has left my USB devices, thumbnail, nook, ipod, etc. The device manager now confirms I have a working CD/DVD but I stuck in a game and was able to start it, :) My Pc now shows the device as well, it didn't before. Hope it works for you because I have spent days trying to get this thing back again.

I have fixed that by uninstalling the Toshiba Recovery Media Creator. (But I do not know why..)

Dvd Not Working After Windows 10 Upgrade Advisor

I have the same problem with my Samsung (TSSTcorp CDDVDW) on Windows 10. So I went out and purchased a new CDDVDW by ASSUS. Windows 10 could not find it either. Went back to Windows 7 and now I have 2 CDDVDW working just as good as before. It appears to me that in order to go with windows 10 I will have to replace my motherboard with a windows 10 compatible. Hopefully, my I7 quad core will work on a new motherboard if in fact an 1155 socket is acceptable to windows 10.
