Plot[edit]

Preetam (Ganesh) is on a visit to Eva Mall in Bangalore; amidst a heavy wind, he spots a pretty girl, Nandini (Pooja Gandhi). While staring at her, he inadvertently falls into a manhole. Nandini rescues him from the pit, but in the process loses her heart-shaped watch she had just bought.

While accompanying his mother to Madikeri in Coorg, Preetam confronts a man named Jaanu (Neenaasam Ashwath). Jaanu, who has been following Nandini, beats Preetam thinking that he is in love with Nandini. Preetam, unaware that Jaanu has vowed not to allow anyone near Nandini, trashes Jaanu and his gang in revenge.

In Madikeri, Preetam unexpectedly meets Nandini. He identifies himself and expresses his love towards her and offers to tie the watch as an indication for their marriage. Nandini, who is already engaged, rejects his request. Nonetheless, Preetam vows to marry Nandini if she meets him again. In the meantime, Preetam discovers that his nearly-deaf host in Madikeri, Col. Subbaiah, is Nandini's father and that Nandini's marriage is only a week away. Dejected, Preetam throws Nandini's heart-shaped watch away. But Nandini telephones him and taunts him to return. Delighted, Preetam goes in search of her watch and spots a rabbit, which he calls Devadas, and brings it along with the watch.

Since Nandini's friends are due to arrive from Mumbai for the marriage, Preetam takes Nandini to the railway station. The train is delayed by five hours, so Nandini and Preetam decide to visit a nearby hill-temple. While returning from the temple, Preetam and Nandini are caught in rain. An old couple offers Preetam and Nandini to take shelter inside their hut. Preetam, still in two minds about expressing his love to Nandini, grabs a couple of toddy bottles, goes out in the rain and starts drinking. However, when Nandini walks towards him, offering an umbrella, he is under a state of intoxication and tells Nandini that he'd better stay away from Nandini to remain a decent boy, rather than to propose or elope with her.

Nandini is now in love with Preetam and is in a dilemma as her wedding is due in a few days. She asks him to take her to the top of a waterfall where she expresses her love for him while standing at the edge.

Preetam, intent on marrying Nandini, takes Col. Subbaiah for a morning jog to discuss the matter. But Col. Subbaiah, a heart patient, tells Preetham that he's expected to die anytime and his only aim in life is to get Nandini married to Gautam also a army officer who saved his life one day during a war. Also he sees the fear in Nandini's mother when she sensed Nandini could be in love with someone else as the wedding was to happen the next day and all invitations were out. Also she felt it would be very unfair to a good person like Gautham. Hence Preetam decides to sacrifice his love for a greater good and let Gautham marry Nandini. The night before the wedding, an extremely depressed Preetam goes to a road-side bar to drink. Gautam arriving for his wedding cemoney, with heavy rains and interior broken roads of Coorg, asks the bar-owner for directions to Col. Subbaiah's home; when Jaanu tries to kill Gautam, Preetam saves Gautam and convinces Jaanu that only Gautam is the best person to marry Nandini.

The next day, Preetam brings Gautam to the marriage house as Gautam was getting late and his car had issue. They reached just in time for the ceremony, but Preetam declines to attend. Gautam asks for the heart-shaped watch as a remembrance but Preetham leaves, unwilling to part with it. There is a search for Preetam, and only his mother knows the truth about his love, but hides her worry.

Resignedly, Preetam watches the arch proclaiming 'Gautham weds Nandini' and the marriage taking place in Kodava style. As he leaves, he spots Devadas and takes it with him. He drives towards Bangalore, all the while expressing his disappointment to Devadas, but later comes to realize that Devadas is dead.

Development[edit]

Director Yograj Bhat, who had earlier dabbled in advertising and corporate films, began working on the script of Mungaru Male.^[29] He read the script to Puneet Rajkumar and Ramya who rejected it.^[30] Ganesh introduced Yograj Bhat to producer E. Krishnappa, who agreed to finance the film. Bhat cast a relatively unknown actress, Pooja Gandhi, for the lead female role in the film.

Filming[edit]

Approximately 80% of the scenes were filmed in the rain.^{[31][better source needed]} Shooting locations included major part in ^[31]Sakaleshpura, Madikeri,^[31]Jog FallsSagara,^[31] and Gadag. Krishna, the cameraman, was a part-time photographer prior to the film.

Soundtrack[edit]

Mano Murthy scored the film's background music and its soundtrack, lyrics for which was penned by Jayant Kaikini, Yogaraj Bhat, Kaviraj and Hrudaya Shiva. The soundtrack album consists of seven tracks.^[32] Anand Audio bought the distribution rights for ₹500,000.^[33] It was released on 6 November 2006 in Bangalore.^[34]

Upon the album's release, it topped the charts with the song 'Anisuthide' receiving significant radio and TV air time.^[35] The album emerged as a massive success topping every Kannada music chart. It was reported that by mid-May 2007, over 200,000 copies were sold in compact discs alone.^[36]Hindustan Times reported, 'The film has just completed seven weeks, but audio sales have broken all earlier records. Composer Mano Murthy has once again created musical magic with songs like 'Anisuthidhe' and 'Onde Ondu Saari'.'^[37]

The success of the film's soundtrack, especially the track 'Anisutide', further propelled Nigam's playback singing career in Kannada cinema.^[35] With the song, lyricist and writer Jayant Kaikini's reputation as a writer of romantic songs further elevated, and is considered one of his best.^[38] The film also established Murthy as the most-sought composer.

Home media[edit]

The satellite rights were acquired by television channel Star Suvarna for ₹36 million.^[39] The DVD of the film with 5.1 surround sound was distributed by Anand Video.^[40]

Critical response[edit]

Rediff.com's critic awarded it a three-star rating and praised its cinematography, technical values, and the acting of Ganesh and Anant Nag.^[41]

Indicine.com's critic rated the film 4 out of 5, describing Ganesh as the 'life and soul of the movie'. Other praise was directed at Gandhi, 'Sanjana makes a confident debut. Veteran actor Anant Nag with his brilliant comic timing provides able support'.^[42]

Box office and performance[edit]

It made with a production budget ₹2^[1] crore (20 million), the film collected ₹50 crore (500 million) in 300 days.^[43][44] Then film went on to gross ₹50^[2][3]–75 crore^[4] (₹500–750 million) by the end of its theatrical run of 865 days.^[21][45] The film has also been released with 150 prints in Karnataka.^[46] This was the first Indian film which ran over a year in a multiplex: PVR cinemas Bangalore.^[47]Mungaaru Male was being screened at full theatres, one year after its release.^[48] According to reports it was the first Kannada film to touch ₹50 crore club in history of Kannada film industry.^[49]

Mungaru Male was released to 10 countries including the United States, Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, UK, Hong Kong and Dubai. It was the highest-grossing Kannada film overseas.^{[citation needed]} It had made ₹36 lakh (equivalent to ₹86 lakh or US$130,000 in 2018) in the US alone.^[50][51]

Awards and nominations[edit]

The film was awarded the Best Kannada Film award for the year 2006–07 by the Government of Karnataka (seven awards in total from the Government of Karnataka). It won three Filmfare awards: best music, best direction and best film. However, it did not win a single national award from the Government of India.^[52]

Legacy[edit]

The success of Mungaru Male turned Ganesh and Pooja Gandhi into most sought-after actors in Kannada cinema.^[54] Ganesh had back-to-back commercial successes in Cheluvina Chittara (2007), Hudugaata (2007) and Krishna (2007). Ganesh and Bhat delivered two consecutive films that emerged as commercial successes, the other being Gaalipata (2008).^[55] The film also proved to be a launchpad for the career of actress Pooja Gandhi.^[15] And Gandhi also delivered back-to-back commercial superhit films such as Milana (2007), Krishna (2007), Taj Mahal (2008) and Budhivanta (2008).^[56][57]

Producer E Krishnappa and distributor Jayanna were raided by the Income Tax department multiple times. The department alleged that the film had collected Rs 67.5 crore and demanded tax for that amount. After Mungaru Male, two of Ganesh's next films also became super hits.^[58]

Bhat wrote about the making of Mungaru Male in the book Haage Summane, which was released on the occasion of the silver jubilee celebration for the movie.^{[59][clarification needed]}

Remakes[edit]

The remake rights of Mungaru Male were acquired by Mr Suryaprakash Rao of SPR Entertainers India Private Limited for ₹1.5 crore (15 million) for both the Tamil-language and the Telugu-language versions. It was reported that Boney Kapoor was planning to remake the film in Hindi starring either Imran Khan or Ranbir Kapoor.^[25]

The movie was remade in Telugu in 2008 as Vaana,^[23] in Bengali in 2008 as Premer Kahini , in Odia in 2009 as Romeo - The Lover Boy^[26] and in Marathi in 2017 as Premay Namaha,^[60] thereby becoming the first Kannada movie to be remade in three non-south Indian non - Hindi Indian languages.^[61] This was the fourth Kannada movie to be remade in four languages after the 1958 movie School Master , the 1986 movie Anuraga Aralithu and the 2002 movie Appu.

Sequel[edit]

It was announced in July 2014 that Shashank would be directing the sequel of the film, titled Mungaru Male 2. Ganesh reprised his role in the film, produced by J. Gangadhar under the banner of E. K. Pictures.^{[62][needs update]} The sequel was released in 2016.

Mungaru Male 2 (translation: Pre-monsoon Showers) is a 2016 Indian Kannadaromantic drama film co-written and directed by Shashank. It stars Ganesh, V. Development[edit]

After the commercial success of the 2006 film Mungaru Male, which grossed ₹750 million,^[13][14][15] the makers conceived a second part for the film, which they had previously planned while shooting for the film was on course. With producer E. Krishnappa objecting to the title Mungaru Male Part 2, the title Preetham Prem Kahani was fixed. Ganesh was to reprise his role as Preetham opposite Ramya.^[16] In September, The Times of India carried a report which said that Rockline Venkatesh would produce the film titled Mungaru Male 2, and that it would be directed by Preetham Gubbi, the screenwriter of Mungaru Male. It was reported that Ganesh would reprise his role and the makers were on the lookout for the female lead.^[17] The sequel however, did not take off for seven years until reports came out in early-July 2014, when it was announced, albeit by a different team.^[18] It was reported that G. Gangadhar, the executive producer of Mungaru Male would produce it.^[19] He approached Shashank to direct it, who initially refused, but was keen on directing Ganesh. However, after much insistence, reports said Shashank relented and began working on the film's story and screenplay, which he completed by March 2015.^[20] It was revealed that Ganesh would reprise his role in the film as the main protagonist, and that the film would be titled Mungaru Male 2.

Casting[edit]

V. Ravichandran was the second actor to be signed by the makers of the film, in May 2015, though at the time of the announcement, his role in the film was not made clear.^[21] However, it was speculated that he would play Ganesh's father.^[22] The director Shashank said the search for a 'new face' as a female lead began with the announcement of the film. He spotted the photos of a Mangalore-based model Neha Shetty, in the newspapers in February 2015, as reports came out of her winning beauty contest WTN Miss Mangalore, who on being placed at the Miss India South emerged as a runner-up.^[23] Keen on having her on the film, he approached her, who, then a student of pre-university course was busy with her examinations. She was eventually signed in July 2015 as the female lead opposite Ganesh.^[24] It was also revealed that P. Ravi Shankar and Sadhu Kokila would play supporting roles. Arjun Janya was signed by the makers to score the film's background music and compose six track as part of its soundtrack.^[22]

At the time of announcement of the film in November 2014, it was reported that the film, unlike its prequel would be filmed over two seasons, the summer and monsoon. The director Shashank said, '[Filming] will go on for five months during the scorching heat of summer as well as during the heavy rains.'^[25] To coincide with the date of commencing of filming and theatrical release of Mungaru Male, the makers planned on having them on the same dates — 28 July and 26 December 2015 respectively. As scheduled, filming began on 26 July. Major part of the first schedule was filmed in the Malnad region of Karnataka and was completed in late-August. Around this time, it was revealed that Ravichandran would play the role of Ganesh's father in the film.^[26] The second schedule began in mid-September. Filming took place in areas surrounding Jog Falls, in the Sagara region of Karnataka. Speaking to The Times of India, Shashank said, '[W]e are capturing a very important sequence at the waterfalls, which will include a major fight sequence. We are also shooting some romantic scenes in the surrounding locations, which are unexplored in Sandalwood.'^[27] In February 2016, it was reported that most of the filming was complete except the songs. Also reportedly, Ganesh would fly to Slovenia along with Aindrita Ray to shoot for a song together.^[28]

Soundtrack[edit]

Arjun Janya has scored the soundtrack and score for the film. A total of six songs and one instrumental track were composed by him and written by the lyricists such as Jayanth Kaikini, Kaviraj, Chandan Shetty, Gopi Iyengar and the director Shashank. Noted singers such as Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal who got their big breaks in Kannada cinema through Mungaru Male recorded their voices to the sequel as well. Bollywood singer Armaan Malik recorded his breakthrough Kannada song and so did the Rajastani folk singer Swaroop Khan. The music for the film was one of the highly anticipated album since its prequel was a musical blockbuster which was composed by Mano Murthy.^[29]

The audio was officially released on 5 August 2016 through Jhankar Music label.^[30]

Release[edit]

The first teaser of the film was released on 5 June 2016 on YouTube. The 107-second video introduces the characters in the film, and actors Upendra, Shiva Rajkumar, Puneeth Rajkumar, Yash and Sudeep feature in it asking questions about the film.^[31] An audio teaser was released on 30 July, which was the first of its kind in Kannada film industry. The audio was released on 5 August.
